A few Malawi Facts:
Population: About 11 million
Per capita income: $180/year
Life expectancy: 37 years
Orphans: about 10% of population and growing: 1.1 million
Percent of sexually active adults with HIV/AIDS: about 35%
The number could be over 50% of sexually active adults. More than 60% of the pregnant women who come into Malawi's two main urban hospitals are HIV positive. Other measurements of HIV/AIDS are done by the UN and similar organizations. They place the figure somewhere around 20 to 25% of adults. Keep in mind that these figures are subject to political conditions, and in any case are guesses. No one knows for sure.
