CHARACTERS FOR DIET FILM

JULIE (about 30) (lead)
A party-all-night web designer whose dreams of grandeur went down with the dot com bubble. She moved back to her hometown-- “to make my mommy happy, I guess.” Over the next three years she put on 70 pounds almost without noticing. “I got an apartment, a job, and a fish-- I should have gotten a scale” She sadly realizes that her weight is messing up her love life. After numerous excuses and missteps, she starts a diet. Julie is irreverent, sexy, and has a quick wit. She also has a secret-- inanimate objects talk to her— a spoon, her book bag, her toothbrush, even her chocolate treat— they are opinionated, tell her what to do. Julie can get very confused.

KATE (30 to 40)   2 days
Kate is Julie’s best friend at work. She has also gained a lot of weight in recent years and now wants to vanquish it. She and Juliet decide to be partners and support each other. Kate is all business, sees things logically, and in contrast to Julie, is never confused or troubled by self-doubt. She takes on weight loss in an organized manner, reaches her goal within a few months. She drags Kate to the gym, the happy hunting ground where she found her new boyfriend.

LAWTON   (30 to 40)   1 day
Lawton is Julie’s boss at the struggling web design firm. He is a good natured fellow, who sees his employees as extended family. He really cares but doesn’t realize the grief he brings Julie by constantly offering her Krispy Kremes, pizza, and the like.

MOM (about 50)    1 1/2 days
Julie’s mom is skinny, a bit prissy, and definitely out of style. She loves Julie, but can’t help continually making little judgmental jabs in an effort to “help” her chubby daughter see her version of “the light”.   The Mom also plays in a flashback 25 years before, where, among other things, she catches 8-year-old Julie stealing chocolate. The younger mom is prissy, disciplined, but very indulgent with her daughter.

ROBIN (about 30)   half day
Robin is Julie’s sister. Like Julie, she is somewhat irreverent and silly, but a little closed off. She’s the skinny sister, with a figure that never ceases to turn heads.

JERRED (about 30) half day or less
Robin’s oversexed boyfriend. He’s very cute, but unfortunately has a taste for slightly disturbing sexual innuendo.

LOUIE (about 30)    2 half days
Julie’s boyfriend. He appears late in the film.   He’s a good looking skinny guy who is constantly eating. Louie lifts weights, is polite, and grins a lot. In a restaurant, he encourages Julie to stick to her diet as he indulges in chocolate lava cake.

HELEN (30 to 40)   1 1/2 days (maybe more)
Julie’s second friend from work. Practical and encouraging of Julie’s diet, she is always trying to spread cheer. Besides Kate, she’s Julie’s other work confidante.

JULIE, AGE 8   3-4 hours
Somewhat calculating, very sure of herself. Able to break the rules and still look innocent.

NURSE RACHETT    1 1/2 days
An absolute authoritarian, direct from a totalitarian state. She doesn’t speak.   But she has a speaking role in that she also plays the voice of Julie’s authoritarian bathroom scale.

2 POLICE DETECTIVES   3 hours
Overcoats and fedoras and the stereotypical screwed up faces. These guys make Julie’s interrogation no walk in the park.

DRUG DEALER   3 hours
He’s real bad, dirty, but if you got the bucks he’ll get you loaded (if you shoot up chocolate).

DIABETICS   2 hours
Real ones. Even a family.   They’re almost 10% of the population.

WEIGHT WATCHER’S LEADER / GROUP   3 hours
She’s heavy into low calorie snacks when we meet here. Full of enthusiasm for an effective program.

TWO SKINNY GIRLS AT GYM   2 hours
Renowned for their little tight asses wrapped in spandex. Without knowing it, they make Julie feel like a beached whale.

TWO GUYS AT GYM   3-4 hours
Sweet nice normal guys. One of them could be Louie.

WAITRESS   2 hours
Does her thing, but with extra attitude.

ANAREXIC GIRL   2 hours
A short scene that starts off with her losing it all in the toilet.

EXTRAS:

When we shoot house parties, groups at restaurants, or office locations we will need extras for 3 hours or so.
